Ecolibrium - Build a Virtual Laboratory to Monitor Climate and Health in Your Community
Organization: Loisaida, Inc.
Project Name: Ecolibrium - Build a Virtual Laboratory to Monitor Climate and Health in Your Community
Project ID: 136
Neighborhood/Communities that the project will serve: CB Manhattan 12 (Washington Heights),CB Manhattan 11 (East Harlem),CB Bronx 01 (Mott Haven), Citywide, CB Bronx 03 (Morrisana)
Borough: Manhattan, Bronx
Project Description:
The Ecolibrium project aims to help youth share skills/interests, learn about environmental justice and local monitoring systems, micro-computing, 3D and Graphic Design. Youth will define objectives, form and develop a team, build and deploy environmental monitors to visualize and share data gathered via a social media account that will be created for the project.
This will be a great opportunity for youth from across the city to connect with each other and work as a team, combining individual skills and interests towards a common goal; to learn about an innovative approach to monitoring their environment using both hands-on and virtual tools.
Youth will lead this initiative and earn some money while learning about micro-computing and monitoring systems, data and design! Track project goals and accomplishments via social media and live data visualization
Experiential learning practices will be employed to foster a diversity of skills according to individual and collective interests. The idea is to encourage youth to share their local/global environmental and social justice concerns through active and passive engagement. Youth will be asked to share their skills and advance their contribution to the project in a given focus area (be it technical, tactile, or creative).
What Youth are saying about the organization: “I really appreciate the Loisaida Center because it shows the craftiness of my culture. I am a Puerto Rican, Dominican, Haitian, Mexican and African American, so I'm mostly Hispanic. And what you do shows our power. So thank you.” - R.J. (Youth Member)
