- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- According to NYC Votes' 2023 Voter Analysis Report, the Bronx as a borough as the lowest turnout of all five boroughs. Additionally, Bronx Community District 1 (CD1), which is comprised of the neighborhoods of Mott Haven, Melrose and Port Morris) had the lowest voter turnout of all 59 community districts citywide. In short, Bronx CD1 that is not as civically engaged as it could be despite having some great community institutions and organizations. This lack of civic engagement has many repercussions: namely lack of political accountability, resulting in issues in the neighborhoods being worse than they would be if more people were organized, educated and empowered with the knowledge and confidence to shape systemic change.
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- The solution to this challenge is young people. South Bronx Unite proposes a youth ambassador program where South Bronx Unite partners with local public schools to educate and empower high school students to educate their peers, families and Bronx Community Board 1 on the top issues in the neighborhood, identifying solutions to resolve them.
