- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- We retain the character of Murray Hill by supporting such projects as beautifying and maintaining the cleanliness and greenery of our streets and Park Avenue street malls, land-marking of our historic buildings, zoning and initiating public safety projects, training residents of the local shelter, newly arriving immigrants and other disenfranchised groups in Horticulture and as arboreal assistants, to help all of our citizens, including the young, the old and the needy. The Murray Hill Committee, Inc. d/b/a Murray Hill Neighborhood Association (MHNA) is an all-volunteer organization that makes Murray Hill a desirable place to live, work, and visit. We preserve and maintain Murray Hill as a unique residential and historic neighborhood. We retain the area's character by supporting such projects as beautifying and maintaining the cleanliness and greenery of our streets and malls, land-marking our historic buildings, zoning, and initiating public safety projects. We will train residents of the local 30th Street Shelter, immigrants, and other groups highlighted herein in Horticulture, gardening, trash, litter, and Graffiti removal. and as We retain the character of the area by supporting such projects as beautifying and maintaining the cleanliness and greenery of our streets and Park Avenue street malls, land-marking of our historic buildings, zoning and initiating public safety projects, training residents of the local shelter in Horticulture to help all of our citizens, including the young, the old and the needy. Technicians to help them gain skills that benefit our citizens, including the young, the old, and the needy. Also, we maintain a website and issue a newsletter entitled Murray Hill Life, published three times a year to inform our residents of human interest stories, events, issues, and governmental initiatives affecting our community. Incidentally, many movies are filmed in Murray Hill because of its beauty and character, enhancing the economy and the iconoclastic presence of our historic buildings and Park Avenue street malls, bringing filmmakers, tourists, and artists from around the world to our neighborhood and our world-class city.
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- We aim to keep flowers in full bloom along Park Avenue, one of New York's best-known avenues. We operate as a mini-Central Park Conservancy by maintaining and beautifying public parkland at private expense. Park Avenue is undoubtedly one of the beauty spots of New York City because, without the malls, it would be just another cement landscape. Much of the money we raise goes to gardeners and maintenance people. The funding we hope to receive will help us train local men's shelter residents, recently arriving immigrants, and other disenfranchised groups to clean and assist Horticulturalists in maintaining the park malls. Next year, we will celebrate our 62nd, 63rd, and 64th anniversaries of the Murray Hill Committee, Inc. d/b/A, The Murray Hill Neighborhood Association, because we could not implement the celebrations because of COVID-19 and the loss of neighborhood and donations from residents during those years. In 2025, we will commemorate a range of special events that will help bring notice to Murray Hill from tourists, additional filmmakers, artists, and interested New Yorkers. The activities and showcasing of our neighborhood's history, culture, art, and restaurants will enhance our economy to benefit residents and New York City. We will mark these three years of the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association by inviting additional renowned artists to display on Park Avenue malls with the consent of the Parks Department and according to its guidelines. We will accomplish this by inviting notable artists to submit artwork for our co-anniversary celebrations. For example, we have sponsored three exhibitions of world artists through our resources in our malls and streetscapes. The artists were procured from three countries, including the United States. One international artist is currently exhibiting sculptures on the Park Avenue street malls. Sculpture presentations may occur during the winter & Spring months. With the help of the proposed grant, we will continue our exhibitions with the NYC Parks Department's continuing approval, which it has cooperatively given. The proposed solution is embodied in the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association's SEO (Special Employment and Training Opportunity) Program. that will train adults from the designated groups to help us fulfill our mission and provide long-term workforce development training for disadvantaged people at the same time. MHNA, in collaboration with New York City agencies like the Department of Homeless Services, Youth and Community Development, Housing and Preservation, and NYC Health Department facilitated by NYC agencies such as Department of Homeless Services, Youth and Community Development, Housing and Preservation, and NYC Health Department will assist us in making our community and New York City at large, the best that it can be. The Proposed Solicitation: The U.S. green nursery, landscape, and horticultural industry generated 2,315,357 jobs and had an annual payroll of over $176.5 billion in 2022. Industry labor generally accounts for more than 40% to 70% of production costs and 31% of gross sales. This cost is much higher than for other manufacturing sectors. The industry's heavy reliance on labor and the need to provide technical information to workers for advancement opportunities are evident. Labor shortages, immigration reform, and the legal status of employees are widely reported as the industry's most critical issues. Workers we are targeting for training constituted 70% of the average nursery workforce, including general laborers (76%), crew leaders (61%), and sales/managers (others) (21%). Sixty percent of nursery employees had yet to receive work-related training, although 81% of men and 72% of women were interested, and being trained increases employee retention. The importance of workforce development training in horticulture cannot be overstated. The Workforce Development Training Program in Horticulture (WDTPH) we and our collaborators have designed is a comprehensive curriculum covering a broad horticulture spectrum. Topics include plant identification, soil science, pest management, landscape design, and plant cultivation. Program Expansion: The proposal is an expansion of the successful program we piloted in which we trained residents of the local men’s shelter to clean and assist horticulturalists in maintaining the Park Avenue Malls, small Murray Hill parks and gardens and parks in other areas of NYC. The proposal is a more comprehensive three-phased program beginning with an introduction to the basic principles and practices of horticulture. The first phase provides a foundation in plant biology, soil science, and pest management. Participants learn about the importance of biodiversity, the role of plants in ecosystems, and how various factors affect plant growth and development. In the second phase, participants advance their understanding of horticulture through hands-on experience in garden design and landscape maintenance. They are guided by experienced professionals who provide insights into efficient practices for maintaining healthy landscapes. Practical sessions allow participants to learn about soil preparation, plant selection, and how to design aesthetically pleasing and sustainable landscapes. The third phase of the program focuses on employability skills and career readiness. Skills include resume preparation, English as a second language classes, writing, interview techniques, and job search strategies tailored to the horticulture industry. Additionally, we offer networking opportunities with local employers in the horticulture field. To measure our success, we will: Monitor the number of participants who complete the program Track job-placement rates among graduates of the program Measure the increase in participant knowledge as measured through pre- and post-program assessments. Our community partners play a vital role in ensuring the success of our program. We collaborate with local garden centers, green nurseries, agricultural extension agencies, private sector horticultural companies, and community organizations. These partnerships provide opportunities for experiential learning and internships for our participants. They also enhance the relevance of our training by providing insights into current industry practices and trends. Community Partners & Role: Our community partners will provide training expertise and facilitate assistance with attaining citizenship and work permits during and following training and connections to potential employers in the horticulture sector. The program’s three phases will be completed within one year, including post-program support with job placement. Our ultimate goal is to help participants secure gainful employment within the horticulture industry upon completing the program. Our Track Record: We trained 32 residents as groundskeepers and horticultural workers, therefore the proposed program is an expansion to other target groups such as Public Housing Residents, Justice Impacted People, Limited English Speakers, Immigrants/ Migrants Veterans, low income people.. The Murray Hill training of the 30th Street Shelter residents helped us a) identify and rectify the specific areas of Murray Hill with the most severe litter and graffiti issues. b) The program made it possible to offer 30th Street residents a wider range of employment opportunities outside of the shelter system, thus demonstrating a tangible value to the neighborhood in which they are located and helping participants build a track record on which to access paid work and opportunities outside the community. c) The program helped us to improve the beauty of the flowers and greenery and cleanliness of our main business areas. d) It helped us secure pictures of before and after evidence of the results of the MHNA partnership work and evaluation of the cleanup and beautification of our Park Avenue Malls. The Number of People or Organizations that Will Directly Benefit: We will train 32 people who will be screened to determine their interest in horticultural work and careers and to determine school or work histories. Those trainees, in turn, will reinvest their profits in their families, a family member's education, or their community. Moreover, those workers will positively affect the lives of more than 48,000 residents by enhancing park and Mall spaces and improving the cleanliness of the area through the Green and Clean Committee of The Murray Hill Committee. The Results/Outcomes We Anticipate Being Able to Achieve for Those We Serve: Clients Served: We will provide horticultural training to 32 vulnerable people: low-income, minorities, women, LGBTQ, and immigrants. Successful Program Completion: We anticipate that at least 90%, or 29, of the trainees will complete the program. Successful Post-Training Employment: We anticipate that 100% of the program's trainees will secure employment. Successful Retention: We anticipate that 90% of the trainees who complete the program will remain employed with one employer for at least six months to one year. Full-Time Placements: We anticipate that at least 75% of the completing trainees will secure full-time employment. Part-Time Placements: We anticipate that at least 25% of the completing trainees will secure part-time employment. How Those Results Align with the Results the Murray Hill Committee’ SEO workforce development program as Articulated in Relevant Guidelines: Workforce development aims to create economic prosperity for individuals, businesses, and communities. Workforce development focuses on individuals' ability to grow their skills and develop the tools they need for employment and business success. New York's investment in workforce development will foster collaboration among New York City and New York State agency partners and with industry, employers, institutions of higher education, and workforce trainers. This new, holistic approach to workforce development will help New York City achieve key programmatic goals, including: *Expanding access to training and placement support for unemployed and disadvantaged in Murray Hill and other under-served communities that have traditionally faced barriers to employment *Ensuring New York City's workforce is equipped with skills required to meet the needs of businesses in high-growth sectors in New York City *Creating pathways for unemployed and underemployed New York City residents to access good jobs that provide economic security and opportunities for career growth *Sustaining talent pipelines for essential industries experiencing growing needs or high attrition rates Another goal of the MHNA is to preserve and increase the quality and availability of well-maintained parks, open spaces, and other essential community resources. Parks, Park Avenue Malls, tree plantings, and green spaces provide a variety of health benefits by promoting physical activity, connection to nature, and opportunities for community engagement. Green spaces can be defined in many ways, such as forested areas or our landscaped Park Avenue Malls, which include some natural elements, like street trees, flowers, and plants. Green space is a term that includes both natural ecosystems and key components of the built environment, such as public parks, greenways, gardens, and forests, as well as private yards and other natural areas like our Park Avenue Malls. Green spaces also provide a number of mental health benefits. People who spend more time in green areas enjoy enhanced cognitive functioning and attention and reduced stress and are more likely to report high levels of happiness and well-being. The green land cover also yields economic benefits and has been linked to lower healthcare spending and higher financial well-being and security levels. Costs of Training Attendance: Our tuition costs are less than half of what we would need to pay for a private training program and a fraction of the cost of a private college. This is based on full-time enrollment of trainees for the entire year. Below is MHNA's estimated budget used to calculate cost of attendance. Funds Requested for Costs and Expenses-Full-time Funds Requested from The People's Money Initiative Tuition & Fees—per Trainee $ 4,800 Books & Supplies—per Trainee $1,200 The total Request from The People's Money Initiative for each trainee is (Tuition and Fees $4,800 and $1,200 for Books and Supplies) for a total of $ 6,000 per trainee. Total Request for All 32 Horticultural Trainees (32 trainees @ $6,000 each) is $192,000.
