- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- Community block associations were most active in the 1970's, but they have declined over time. While quality-of-life issues remain, the approach to addressing them has shifted.\"Together for a Better Block\" addresses the challenges of a community experiencing exponential housing growth, an influx of new immigrants, and insufficient city environmental services that keep our block green and clean. These include maintaining community identity, building social cohesion, and addressing overburdened infrastructure.
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- \"Together for a Better Block\" addresses challenges in rapidly changing neighborhoods by fostering environmental stewardship, community engagement, and social cohesion. Block by block, with activities like tree pit care, gardening, and litter patrol pick-ups, residents—both longtime and new—collaborate to beautify shared spaces and build connections. The program, which includes an organized event on a residential block, and programming run by a community non-profit, Community Board, or incorporated into the activities of one of our elected officials from the community, could include workshops on sustainability, a tree pit adoption initiative, and friendly competitions like the \"Cleanest or Greenest Block Challenge,\" encouraging civic pride and participation along with specific swag for the block. Example: T-shirt or mug with Together for a Better Block East 201 street! These efforts culminate in an organized end-of-season celebration, showcasing cared-for spaces, recognizing volunteers, and honoring the community’s collective achievements while celebrating its diversity and resilience. This programming needs to hire local community members to help do direct outreach on-site to advocate for the activity sign-up and block volunteers to help organize the event. Supplies of tree pit care, planting, customized t-shirts/mugs, and celebration events can be covered by this funding. This could be a modernized version of block associations back then. A Together for a Better Block newsletter could also be created with information about community service, unity, reminders of city services, etc.
