- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- According to recorded data statistics, “The South Bronx was once noted as the poorest congressional district in the United States; Fewer adults in the South Bronx graduate from college than in the city; The South Bronx has socioeconomic, health, and environmental disparities.” Drugs, pollution and crime continue to litter our streets and our lungs. South Bronx residents find ourselves in challenges, however lacking many accessible community spaces in our neighborhood… Have you ever asked yourself: What can I do to improve the health and quality of life for myself and my family? Where do I go when I need help finding housing? How does the school system work? Who can help understand this document? Where can I go to get help looking for and applying for a job? What events are happening in my community? How do I host an event in my community? What volunteer opportunities are there in my community? Who can advocate for me and guide me to claim agency for and with those in my community? As an educator of over 20 years, I am dedicated to learning, growing and paying it forward. My life work is to educate, advocate and act as a resource to serve the communities I am a part of. My mission is to recognize those of us who have been marginalized within society and create physical safe spaces in my community where we have an opportunity to break generational curses and thrive no matter the statistical challenges we face. If my project is funded it can make the dream of South Bronx Space Haven a reality, not just for myself, but for those in my community who deserve “A Bite of NYC’s Big Apple [Pie] - The People’s Money”.
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- I would like to address the lack of resources, and access to resources in my South Bronx community. At South Bronx Space Haven, knowledgeable advocates (who are professionals in their own right) will volunteer in our community space, to support families, children, and individuals trying to navigate the New York City systems we are a part of (education, housing, health care, jobs, community issues, etc.). South Bronx Space Haven will also address the lack of civic engagement and community events in public spaces, as well as ways in which we can improve the quality of life in our community and beyond. Think of this as a community space in our South Bronx neighborhood where you can find comfort in coming together, learning, sharing and showing what you know, as well as help your community thrive and grow! Come swap books at our Free Little Library! Visit our resource center! Get connected with an advocate to help you navigate a situation. Find a comfortable, quiet place to work or study. Connect with a thought partner. Build your vision board. Enjoy year round events for the people, by the people, happening in public spaces in OUR community! We invite you to Share Good Vibes Only at Bronx Bronx Space Haven and Pay it Forward.
