- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- Upper East Side Harlem Washington Heights New York has a reputation of being a dirty city and it’s not a surprise. New Yorkers have to endure filthy sidewalks and parks every single day and recently, the problem appears to be getting worse. My neighborhood of East Harlem has seen a dramatic rise in trash on sidewalks and the nearby parks. While us New Yorkers are fortunate to have access to public parks, it is in the best interest of us to keep them clean.
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- Given that the Sanitation Department already has immense responsibilities, some burden can be taken off of them by having a program which allows volunteers to spend their free time cleaning public parks. Anyone over the age of 14 would be allowed to volunteer (although people under 18 would likely require parental consent) and there would be opportunities every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This can happen in Central Park as it’s in the center of Manhattan and is visited by many people. Other parks can include the Carl Schurz Park. Volunteers would be given gloves, masks, and other materials. This would allow people struggling to find a sense of achievement or people struggling to make connections an opportunity to make an impact by cleaning up their community and make new friends along the way.
