- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- AFYW supports low-income and immigrant girls, ages 11 to 18, to overcome obstacles, strengthening their confidence as leaders while developing skills in critical thinking, use of data and scientific methodology, and decision-making. AFYW reaches girls during their critical adolescent years when studies and observation indicate a decline in self-confidence. For immigrant young women in particular, cultural expectations and family responsibilities may limit their participation in outside activities and can preclude the exploration of higher education and professional employment opportunities. Our strength-based approach challenges gender stereotypes and helps immigrant and low-income teenage girls think critically about larger social issues, while also helping them to reflect on their personal educational, career, and life goals. By developing the participants’ leadership, healthy decision-making and refusal skills, we protect girls from risky behavior that can impede future goals.
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- Access for Young Women (AFYW), now in its 31st year at Queens Community House, will host the annual Young Women's Leadership Conference, where young women ages 11-18, facilitate workshops on issues relevant to youth and community experiences. The conference will showcase young women leading community members through educational workshops, song and dance performances and open mic presentations on leadership in Queens. Those attending the workshops will have opportunities to learn about trending topics affecting youth and the communities in Queens.
