Affordable Housing Guidance
- Do you have specific Neighborhood(s) in mind?
- Chinatown, District 1
- Which group(s) does your idea focus on? Select as many as apply.
- Public Housing Residents
- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- Many people don’t know their options for public housing and how to find one that’s a good fit for them. The application process can be a lengthy and challenging one, especially for people who are unfamiliar with the terms or are non-English speakers. Additionally, public housing is an issue that affects the entire community, but not everyone is involved. Hence, we hope to engage more of the community, including the youth. Specifically in Chinatown, housing is a big concern especially with the rise of gentrification and more people moving in. Chinatown's Civic Groups Have Held Developers at Bay. Can They Survive?
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- Guide people through the process of applying for affordable housing. We want to reach to youth, specifically in low-income areas to spread the word to their families, who can then join the program to find out if they are eligible. Programs to look to for guidance: Family Self Sufficiency Program: Provides education, job training, job placement, and financial literacy services to help families in the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Section 8 program become self-sufficient. NHSNYC: Offers a 5-hour virtual homebuyer education course that covers topics to help first-time homebuyers make informed decisions. The course is required for most first-time homebuyer lending programs. SMART Week: A week-long event in NYC public schools that celebrates students in temporary housing. The event aims to raise awareness, understanding, and empathy about homelessness and how it impacts families.
