Community Recreation Co-op
What problem would you like to solve?
A lack of recreational programming for youth and adults in the Mott Haven neighborhood.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
It is vital to empower the agency and ability of marginalized communities to collaborate and engage in mutual aid. This is particularly true around recreational activities, which can effectively enrich and adorn neighborhoods that are impacted by poverty. While the Mott Haven community is the poorest congressional district in the United States, it is profoundly rich in diversity and inclination toward that which infuses civic life with energy and meaning: the arts, athleticism, and creative collaboration.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
The establishment of a community skill-sharing co-op would address the need for recreational programming, while investing in community members with skills to share. In this model, those with abilities in the arts, athletics, or any other skillset would be provided facilitation training and a stipend to share their knowledge with the community. In this way, the community can build fellowship, learn valuable skills, and provide a platform for local artists and athletes to share their passion. However, the true value of the community skill-sharing co-op lies in the intergenerational connections it will inevitably foster between neighbors across cultures and backgrounds.
Who would that help?
This project would focus on youth and adults in the Mott Haven neighborhood in the Bronx, which is historically underserved.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
Mott Haven
