Community Safety Patrol project!
What problem would you like to solve?
Safety concerns for community members, particularly children, in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Safety is paramount to the liberty of a community. It has been said that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty - this is particularly evident in the Mott Haven neighborhood, which is the poorest congressional district in the United States. No community should feel inhibited in their movement through the streets of their home for fear of violent retribution. And yet, many community members in Mott Haven feel that their safety is not guaranteed. Addressing this issue is an essential first step toward facilitating better conditions in this historically underserved neighborhood.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
The development of a community safety patrol would harness the power of community members and empower their agency in ensuring the safety of the neighborhood. Through this project, training and pay could be provided to establish a safety patrol that would collaborate with local law enforcement to apply harm reduction and de-escalation tactics in an effort to discourage violence and intimidation in the streets of Mott Haven. A particular focus would be placed on implementing outreach and safety education for youth during the Summer, when criminal activity often reaches a zenith.
Who would that help?
This project would focus on youth and adults in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx who feel that their safety is compromised by violence in their community.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
Mott Haven
