Source: {"body":{"en":"<p><strong>What problem would you like to solve?</strong></p><p>The area of Flatbush Brooklyn does not have free music classes for students wanting or curious to learn about steelpan. It is our mission to 1. provide school-age students the opportunity to learn an instrument that was created in the Caribbean 2. Teach the rich cultural heritage of the Caribbean, 3. provide a safe space for young people to be creative and empowered to be future leaders of the community, and 4. avoid any gang activities and/or possible mischief.</p><p><strong>Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community? </strong></p><p>The Caribbean community has established a strong foundation throughout the borough of Brooklyn since the great migration in the late 1960s. However, within the Flatbush section of Brooklyn known today as \"Little Caribbean\", the history and culture of&nbsp;each island are represented and celebrated as a united front. But to preserve the cultural heritage and empower the next generation, FYSP plans to address the lack of cultural education that represents the community within the surrounding public schools, such as the Erasmus campus. Students learn a musical instrument that was created, arranged, and composed by Caribbeans. Such information would build a youth's sense of pride, as well as address the lack of afterschool programs for youth to attend. Studies show that most incidents among young people are done during afterschool hours. FYSP can address this issue as being a violent interrupter in the neighborhood. Another issue that FYSP would address is the increased stress students have reported having. According to researchers, young people are experiencing anxiety and depression prior to the Covid 19 pandemic, but the number has gone number tremendously since returning back to school. The art of learning music can be therapeutic and an outlet to destress and develop coping skills.</p><p><strong>What idea do you have to address the problem?</strong></p><p>FYSP would address the shortage of music programs within the area by providing free instruction to children and youth while preserving cultural heritage and empowering the next generation of pan arrangers and composers.</p><p><strong>Who would that help?</strong></p><p>FYSP would help all participating youth in learning a unique musical skill as well as the history and culture of the Caribbean diaspora.</p><p><strong>What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?</strong></p><p>FYSP would benefit the Flatbush section of Brooklyn.</p>"},"title":{"en":"Flatbush Youth Steelpan Program (FYSP)"}}
