The Womanhood Project
What problem would you like to solve?
[The problem that The WomanHOOD Project would like to solve is the need for high quality after school and summer programming for Bronx Community Board 6 (CB6) youth of color, between the ages of 12 and 17, who identify as female. Our work helps these young people to develop youth leadership skills, and promotes health and well-being, positive identity development, and gender and racial justice.]
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
[It is important to provide high quality after school and summer programming for female-identified youth of color in order to create opportunities for them to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships with their peers, and to develop the skills required to take on leadership roles in order improve their community. In our programs, youth develop their ability to communicate clearly, listen actively, work collaboratively to solve problems, negotiate conflict, and seek or offer help when needed. Our curriculum also helps youth to recognize and build upon their strengths and limitations so that they develop a deep sense of confidence, purpose, and the skills required to improve circumstances for themselves, their families, and others in the community.
Given the social and economic challenges in Bronx Community Board 6 (CB6), including the lack of after school and summer programming for middle and high school youth, unemployment, and limited opportunities for community engagement, the work of The WomanHOOD Project is relevant because our program provides engaging activities, income, and access to community leadership and resources. Our highly qualified staff includes experienced educators and teaching artists who use the input of youth to deliver a curriculum that develops the leadership skills mentioned above. Youth also receive a stipend for their active participation, and we provide meals and transportation free of charge. ]
What idea do you have to address the problem?
[The WomanHOOD Summer Camp is a 3-week program where female identified youth are paid $15 per hour to actively engage in a curriculum focused on youth leadership development, health and well-being, and community engagement through access to local natural and human resources. During the school year, participants come together one weekend a month to engage in hands-on, arts-based workshops focused on themes they identify, and to go on field trips in the Greater New York Area. In order to help strengthen youth development work across district, our partnerships with other community organizations in Bronx Community Board 6 help us to build a network of providers who share best practices and resources in order to strengthen our collective commitment to the youth we serve. ]
Who would that help?
[]The WomanHOOD Project serves female, trans and gender non-conforming (TGNC) youth of color, between the ages of 12 and 1,7 who live or go to school in Bronx Community Board 6 including the neighborhoods of Belmont and East Tremont.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
[Belmont and East Tremont]
