Housing Helpers: Watchdogs
What problem would you like to solve?
The poor housing conditions in NYCHA have left our aging community with distrust and apartments that are not being repaired in timely manners. Our older adults have the right to adequate housing and a quality of life. While apartments remain in disrepair, there are communities that feel there is no accountability for follow up or. true assessments of the apartments they live in.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
It is important because our older adults feel alone in this battle. They are often in poor conditions and may not know how to advocate for themselves or express that they feel it is useless.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
We can have an independent third party assessor in Senior buildings to accurately assess current conditions and actual work that is needed to repair apartments, This independent party will be able to hold public housing officials accountable and facilitate challenging conversations with the offices,
Who would that help?
It would help older adults feel safe and listened to. This would improve the quality of life around the safety of living conditions and accurately address mold and leakages in apartments.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
Mott Haven and Melrose
