What problem would you like to solve?
There is a number of Older Adults that do not leave their homes to engage in community events and activities. They are secluded and often disconnected from a quality of life because they do not have a support system to bring them to activities that are right across the street due to fears.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Our older adult population is growing exponentially and are often without family members nearby. We have community centers that are frequented but it is known that there are older adult members that have fears to even cross a street to get to an older adult center to nearby event. They soften miss arts and cultural experiences, artistic crafts, access to meals and socialization.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
An Intergenerational volunteer / intern program vetting young adults to accompany Older adults to neighborhood events in the community. This would allow a CBO to manage internships, part time jobs or volunteerism opportunities to vet individuals to accompany older adults to and from center and activities. this would be specific to those who do not qualify frothier supportive service but still are fearful of the neighborhood due to rising crime and POST- COVID concerns.
Who would that help?
Our growing Older Adult population over the age of 62 years old; this would provide access to enriching experiences outside of the home and improve mental health outcomes.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
Mott Haven and Melrose
