Sunset Park Safety Walks
What problem would you like to solve?
Public Safety
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Crime rates have been rising throughout New York City, and community members have repeatedly voiced concerns about neighborhood safety, especially seniors and women/femme folks.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
Having individuals trained in bystander intervention and deescalation stationed in areas throughout Sunset Park. These individuals would have language capacities that match the needs of our community (oftentimes, our community members struggle to access safety services due to a lack of language comprehension) and be well-versed on local community resources that individuals can be referred to. These individuals would also help to prevent conflict from escalating and have the knowledge to help folks connect with alternative means to get their needs met. For example, if someone is having a mental health crisis and attempting to interact with folks who are passing by on the street, these officers might be able to help the individual access mental health support without involuntary hospitalization or involving the police. Similarly, if there is someone who is unhoused, these individuals could provide resources for food, shelter, and other resources.
Who would that help?
Local community members.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
Sunset Park
