Elevators in Trains
What problem would you like to solve?
The problem that we would like to solve is the lack of accessibility in many New York City trains stations.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
There are thousands of New Yorkers from all walks of life that use trains everyday to get from Point A to Point B. Whether it is to go to work, to school, to a doctor's appointment, to buy groceries, etc. Since many train platforms above ground are elevated, it makes it difficult for many individuals to go up and down the stairs hindering their ability to use trains. Also why do some platforms have escalators going up to the train station but not going down? For many it's equally as difficult going down as it is going up stairs, especially those haling big items like strollers and luggage.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
An idea to combat this issue would be installing elevators or at least escalators to make the climb up and down the subway station much easier.
Who would that help?
This would help a variety of people, such as, wheelchair users, elderly, parents with children in strollers, tourists coming with luggage, and individuals with health issues that make it difficult for them to climb stairs.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
All boroughs, except maybe Staten Island, where there are above ground raised subway platforms that don’t have elevators.
