What problem would you like to solve?
There is a huge and highly stressed gap in education for adults, especially within the immigrant and Hispanic population in East Harlem, in terms of finance, job availability, worker rights and resources for language learning
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
East Harlem, also called \"El Barrio,\" was named such due to its high concentration of immigrant populations. Our community health workers and key stakeholders highlighted a resounding need for more financial literacy and job readiness for the community which would decrease unemployment, elevate the quality of life of community members and promote progress within families and neighborhoods.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
Our idea was proposed as a series of classes or workshops to help all adults, but especially adults who cannot read or write, cannot speak English, and/or have never assisted financial readiness classes. These classes would include resume building, online application processes, how to best utilize smartphones/ internet, interviewing coaching, housing/ real estate 101, banking and investing coaches, as well as pathway to citizenship and civics classes.
It was stressed that these classes should try and provide one on one help as much as possible to meet specific needs and held in Spanish.
Who would that help?
Community members, families and children, ultimately.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
We represent East Harlem, but any neighborhood with heavily immigrant population would highly benefit from this proposal!
