Workshops- Healthy Eating/Cooking Workshops for Teens and Young Adults
What problem would you like to solve?
Lack of healthy foods- access/availability. Lack of knowledge how to cook and utilize healthy foods. Increase community interaction. Decrease loneliness.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
During COVID and in current days, individuals feel like there is an increased sense of loneliness and not as many opportunities for social interaction especially within the young adult population. Additionally, it is important to give this community the tools and knowledge to cook healthy foods for themselves as well as their families. It will help in terms of cost of food as well since they will be less likely to buy food from restaurants or order take out. This will hopefully help their overall health and ward off things like diabetes.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
Hold workshops that focus on health eating and cooking. This workshop will be for teens and young adults. The class can start by talking about the ingredients they will use and teach them why they are healthy and what the health benefits are. They will then move on to the cooking component. Once the food is cooked and completed, the class will then sit down for the meal together and can form bonds and relationships with their classmates. These classes can be held in community recreation locations, soup kitchen's or utilize a place of worship's kitchen.
Who would that help?
This will help teens and young adults in the Southern Bronx community.
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
Southern Bronx, 10451, 10452 and 10456.
