What problem would you like to solve?
Voter suppression, lack of voter education, and increasing awareness of importance of voting.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
To ensure a strong democracy and so that our community is educated in knowing how much difference they can make with their vote. This is relevant for the community because for years we've had low voter turnout in certain elections and elected officials haven't done much to help address this. We need more funding to help this project so that we can help the youth become more engaged as well as other potential voters who don't participate in the process either because they don't know how to or are not interested due to distrust in the system.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
Voter education and voter registration tabling at NYC schools for High School seniors or any student approaching the age of 18. We would also try to help encourage students to register early if they are close to reaching the age to vote. We would also help other adults eligible to vote at community centers and houses of worship. When tabling we would encourage folks to register to vote and help incentive them to sign up by providing NYC merch mentioning they're registered to vote so that they feel that registering to vote was even more of a memorable experience.
Who would that help?
This can be in collaboration with the NY Board of Election, NYC Board of Education, NYC schools, City Council Members, Community Board Members, the Borough Presidents, students, parents, and teachers.
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
All Boroughs, but starting with Queens.
