Your Money, Your Community, Your Voice.
Brazilian Community Center
What problem would you like to solve?
Lack of physical spaces where social projects can be conducted for the benefit of immigrant communities. Immigrants do not have safe and free spaces to gather in order to conduct social projects, such as theater troops, community organizing, know-your-rights workshops, and groups for cultural preservation, such as capoeira and drumming.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
For cultural preservation, community safety, and information distribution
What idea do you have to address the problem?
Occupy existing space at nonprofits, public schools, and theaters that might be under-utilized. Use these spaces to host immigrant community groups that would not otherwise have a space to rehearse, perform, conduct classes, meet, or conduct trainings, because of economic barriers. Projects can be vetted by a board representative of the community, but the spaces would be free to rent and the projects executed would be free or low-cost to the community.
Who would that help?
Immigrant populations, including newly arrived folks
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
Manhattan
