Big Apple Food Relief
What problem would you like to solve?
Food Insecurity
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Food is an essential need and has become increasingly less accessible due to the rise of inflation. According to the New York Times, in June 2022 food prices were 9.1 percent higher than a year earlier in New York and 10.4 percent higher nationwide. City Harvest reports that 1.5 million New Yorkers are struggling to feed themselves and their families right now - a 36% increase over pre-pandemic figures. Therefore, visits to New York City food pantries and soup kitchens are up 69% in 2022 compared to 2019—and up 14% just since January 2022 when inflation costs began sending food prices soaring.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
I believe that a Free Food Relief program that provides free food pantries could operate throughout the Bronx with the support of neighborhood residents, community centers, churches, local makets, and businesses.
Who would that help?
Residents experincing food insecurity.
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
Bronx and Manhattan
