What problem would you like to solve?
1 in 250 African America women disproportionately have lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks itself. Sometimes this disease can attack major organs and can be fatal. There is no cure for lupus. However, there are ways of improving the quality of life, particularly by eating plant-based whole foods to reduce inflammation, oxidative stress and improve systems. By offering a 3-month program plant-based diet to women of color, we can help women take control of their health, adopt healthier habits, and reduce chronic pain, fatigue, and many more debilitating symptoms.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
As as holistic nutritionist and lupus warrior myself, there has been a lack of resources and support to help women on their recovery journey feel better. This is why I created theEATschool, which principles are to Educate, Adopt and Transform through plant-based living. My mission is to help women with lupus eat more plants and move more to reduce inflammation. The healthcare system generally prioritizes prescription drugs. However, studies show that lifestyle and our environment play a critical role in managing disease regression. I experienced a lack of support myself, as doctors generally spend 1% of their time on nutrition. This is why I left my 12-year career as an accountant to help women that can relate to me feel better and manage lupus to live a relatively normal life. Since changing my lifestyle in 2019, I have regained my health and reduced the severity of lupus. I want to encourage women that they have the power to do the same.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
I would like to work with doctors from the Hospital of Special Surgery (two Rheumatologist that are women of color) to conduct research and implement a 3-month plant-based nutrition program to track and monitor eating habits, supply plant-based meals and track and monitor changes in blood work, to prove that a plant-based diet can significantly reduce lupus symptoms and flares and improve the quality of life. Check this article for a study that was done in the UK: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34978516/
Who would that help?
I would target the program to women of color living in NYC boroughs who have been diagnosed with lupus, SLE. Women could range in age, but it typically affects women of childbearing years (28 - 40).
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
All boroughs would benefit. I live in the Bronx and would also hope women from the Bronx would be included in the study and trial.
