What problem would you like to solve?
In the Fordham and Kingsbridge area, where our participants are located, Physical activities are limited due to lack of resources as a result of COVID 19. Facilities that were previously offering free and low-cost activities are no longer offering their services. As a result, no free or low-cost physical activities are being offered at this time which makes it difficult for the community to remain active and healthy.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Regular physical activities will help to
- prevent and reverse age-related decreases in muscle mass and strength, improve balance, flexibility, and endurance, and decrease the risk of falls in the elderly.
- help prevent coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
- Regular, weight-bearing exercise can also help prevent osteoporosis by building bone strength.
- chronic arthritis sufferers improve their capacity to perform daily activities such as driving, climbing stairs, opening jars, etc.
- increase self-esteem and self-confidence, decrease stress and anxiety, enhance mood, and improve general mental health.
- control body weight and help in losing weight
more physical activity for the community can also help improve the local economy, increase employment opportunities, support neighborhood revitalization, and reduce health care costs
What idea do you have to solve the problem?
provide weekly and monthly fitness and wellness classes. These classes will include but not limited to body conditioning, mind and body awareness, line dancing, dance fitness, Zumba, salsa, walking, hiking, etc.
One year proposal
50 hours of dance fitness classes
20 hours of Zumba classes
260 hours of line dance classes
12 hours of salsa classes
100 hours of line dance social
100 hours of hiking outside the city
200 hours of walking around the city
With an average of 15 to 100 participants per class/events, we will be able to serve an approximate number of about 4,000 participants some of which will probably become regular participants as the program continues
Who would that help?
It would provide services to low income families, Immigrants, LGBTQ, seniors, disabled, Veterans, etc… ages 10-100 give or take, who have no access to health care, and are struggling financially. The majority have health issues including but not limited to diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. They can’t afford a membership to the gym and very limited free fitness and wellness classes are being offered in the community, especially after COVID. The area is also plagued by homeless people and drug use is very prevalent.
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
Bronx
