What problem would you like to solve?
Many immigrant women, in particular of the Bangladeshi community in Kensington, do lack job opportunities because they do not have a high enough proficiency in English or digital literacy skills. Meaning that they cannot navigate the DMV website to make an appointment or apply for jobs to support their families.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
The Bangladeshi Ladies Club shared this idea, because many of the women want a safe space to learn English and simultaneously learn a vocational skill. Making time to learn english alone, without the class being connected to a some kind of job training has not been a successful model in the community.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
The Bangladeshi Ladies Club (a community group in Kensington Brooklyn) proposes to host (either along or with a non-profit partner like 5th avenue committee) a weekly English class that is combined with a vocational skill, for example sewing or stitching. Then the ladies club will work with the alumnae of the group to help them find jobs. Additionally, this class work teach digital skills as well.
Who would that help?
This would help immigrant women in Kensington. The Bangladeshi Ladies Club would help do outreach in the community to spread the word of the class to invite all women that could benefit from this learning environment.
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
Brooklyn.
