Crazy Talented Asians and Friends for Queens
What problem would you like to solve?
[There are many hidden talents amongst the young in Queens which is one of the most diverse population but they lack a safe space to showcase their talents and to be mentored. Crazy Talented Asians & Friends ("CTAF") have been successfuly in showcasing college and young professional artists such as animation, comedy and music since 2020 in partnership with the Flushing Town Hall in Queens. Each year, CTAF has been showcasing 10 selected animation shorts from hundreds of animation submissions; around 7 selected young Asian stand up comedians; and in 2021, we produced the 1st concert showcasing young professional musicians in classical western and Chinese instrument music. All efforts are done by volunteers. We would like to seek funding for educational workshops for college and high school students in these arts as part of our 2023 showcase events. ]
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
[Many young students find the regular schools do not provide the support they need which may lead to poor school participation or isolation. Queens is one of the most diverse community with a large immigrant population. Many young talents lack a safe space to explore and to discover their talents and to have mentors. It is therefore important to provide workshops by young professional artis at the CTAF events so these young talents can feel safe in exploring interests outside of their regulary school environment.]
What idea do you have to address the problem?
[We envision hosting workshops at the CTAF events to be mentored by the performing young artists in animation, comedy and music. With this funding, we will be able to do outreach to local high schools and community centers for their young students to join the workshops to discover or hone their talents.]
Who would that help?
[High school students in Queens, many from immigrant families without the resources or exposures to the artist community. ]
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
[Queens. CTAF has been producing live comedy, animation short film festivals and concerts at the Queens Flushing Town Hall. We have seen a void in mentoring and learning opportunities by the young professional artists and this funding would make the workshops a reality to support the young talents in Queens.]
