Immigrant Families Stronger
What problem would you like to solve?
Because the federal government hasn't been able to catch up with the backlog of immigration, work permits have been significant delayed which stops families from achieving their full earning potential
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
NYC is a city full of immigrants who are excited about learning new things and joining the workforce. They should not be made to suffer because the federal government can't keep up with the workload. At the local level we should find ways of helping all families regardless of status achieve their goals.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
A program that doesn't require a work permit (digital and in-person) that trains all immigrants in high-earning fields like tech, including soft skills like interviewing, tailored for English Language Learners (not just spanish-speaking), so that they can have certificates and paid-internship experience that help them get better jobs upon receipt of working papers. This program should be equivalent to high education at least Associates Level and come with ongoing mentorship. Outreach will also be key!
Who would that help?
Obviously immigrant families but honestly everyone, joblessness creates poverty and poverty strains communities in ways that lead to crime
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
Bronx
