Equal Opportunities in Education Initiative
What problem would you like to solve?
The NYC public school system often forgets about non-traditional students with special needs. I would like to create a project that ensures that all students are taken care of by their school communities by expanding resources that cater to students of every and all abilities.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Personally, this is important to me because I have a close friend who has suffered in a school (middle school) that was supposed to have a adequate inclusion program for those with autism and special needs. Ensuring that there are proper services to assist those with special needs creates a fair standard and shows an overall commitment to education fro everyone.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
- Increase the budget for special needs services in specialized schools and inclusive schools
- Hire professionally trained staff (aids, counselors)
- Conduct check-ins to make sure resources are used properly
Who would that help?
This would assist students of all ages who have specialized needs and their families
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
Queens
