Reimagine High School to Address Whole Student Well-being and Create Informed Young Adults
What problem would you like to solve?
High schools should focus more about students' well-being as a whole and redirect the purpose of high school from preparing for college and preparing a scholar for higher education, to preparing a young adult to be an informed citizen in their community.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Many students think that going directly into higher education is the only option even with financial barriers at home. Schools shove students into college without much consideration for a student's well being, social/financial knowledge, and mental health support.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
I think regents requirements should be changed to better reflect students' needs. Financial literacy courses should be offered. Meetings with your guidance counselor on future goals beyond academic goals should be required. Students should be exposed to other options other than college.
Who would that help?
1) It would help students who are not sure if college is right for them.
2) It would help students who are interested in not going to college and help build support for them to become an informed adult in the workforce.
3) It would help all students who are either going or not going to college to better navigate their future with guidance.
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
Bronx
