What problem would you like to solve?
Commercial food waste plus community hunger
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
20% of all NYC waste is food, with nearly 4 million tons each year ending up in landfill. Meanwhile, 1.4 million people live below the poverty line, including one out of every five children. Rescuing fresh but unsold food for free distribution will help solve both problems.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
The House of Good Deeds currently has three vehicles that rescue resources in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. With funding, they intend to expand their services to consistently rescue food from bakeries and supermarkets who don’t currently work with rescue organizations, and ensure they get distributed for free throughout NYC wherever they are needed, and as funding provides.
Who would that help?
Environmentally, all New Yorkers benefit. Food waste creates unhealthy methane and other gases in landfills, plus costs millions of dollars in collection and transportation costs. Directly, markets and bakeries would benefit by having less water, more corporate pride, and bigger customer appreciation. And of course, individuals and communities in need would receive free and delicious food.
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
Wherever the House of Good Deeds would expand their food rescue service as a result of receiving funding.
