Youth for Environmental Conservation & Justice Council
Organization: Audubon NY
Project Name: Youth for Environmental Conservation & Justice Council
Project ID: 180
Neighborhood/Communities that the project will serve: Citywide
Borough: Citywide
Project Description:
Students will research and discuss the issue of fast fashion manufacturing and its effects on the environment locally and globally. Students will then create an action plan, taking bird conservation, environmental justice and racial justice into account, to address this issue in NYC.
The group of students working on this project will learn about how to use their voices to speak up for an issue that affects them. They will also work to make sure that NYC addresses environmental injustices, affecting birds and people alike, and protects the needs of youth of color.
This project can help set the precedent for conservation orgs to work hand in hand with local communities to address environmental justice needs. It will also serve as a reminder that youth can speak up to enact change.
What Youth are saying about the organization: “I am really excited that a bird conservation organization with a history of having a very homogenous group of members is working with NYC youth to address an issue that nobody at the organization had thought of. Projects like this are the future or conservation and this change is long overdue.” - Youth Member
