Project Description: 

Our project includes a series of outdoors events designed by and for youth, adhering to COVID-19 guidelines, to help uplift youth voice in the city and spark intergenerational action. During these events we will: create and stock a community fridge, do a community clean up, make public art, locate places that could be converted into spaces that help the community through our mapping project, and distribute resources to spur youth involvement in local civic opportunities and mental health resources.

By creating a proposal with youth input, we directly listen to their needs and work towards putting that into action to create positive change for NYC youth and their communities. Our events will build solidarity by working with local organizations as well as leave the community cleaner, with more public art, with more knowledge about opportunities/resources, and with a sense of what it could look like if we listened to youth wisdom about how to change our communities as we build back from COVID-19 (e.g. map where there could be gardens, farms, more affordable housing, etc.).

Our proposal was created by youth for youth in NYC by utilizing a team of youth researchers and data collected from our “Youth Ask Youth” Census Survey from 416 other youth during summer 2020. We were able to pinpoint the direct needs of young people in NYC and follow their lead in making choices to uplift them by listening directly to their thoughts and experiences.
