The Advocacy Project
Organization Name: The Door
Project ID: 154
Project Name: The Advocacy Project
Neighborhood Communities that the Project will Serve:Citywide
Borough:Citywide
Project Description: The Door's Youth Council and staff will work collaboratively to create a series of events which will be open to all New York City's youth exploring a range of social issues and culminating in a block party in Central Harlem. Smaller events leading up to the block party will occur both virtually and in person, tackling a series of social issues that are important to New York City's youth, including representation for LGBTQ+ identified youth, addressing systemic racism, opening up conversations about mental health, and other topics identified by our youth council. These events along with the block party will offer both spaces for serious conversation and social justice work and spaces for joyful expression and play.
Our model relies on a strong sense of community and has a heavy emphasis on the importance of relationships. In a time when this is more important than ever, and also more difficult than ever, we, alongside our youth leaders, will continue to work hard to find ways to connect in a way that makes the young people of New York feel supported and heard.
The Door is always willing to change and adapt to the needs of the Young People. We believe that young people have the keys to a better future for us all. We know that young people should have a seat at every table, and with their guidance, we can continue to build a strong community for New York City.
What Youth are saying about the organization:
Young people who I have worked with for over 7 years still come back and say the same thing that the youth I serve today say, that I am always there to support, guide, and empower them to reach their full potential. They share that they have always felt that not only have I always advocated for them, but I have taught them to advocate for themselves and their communities, so that they too can continue to be changemakers.
