SQPA College/Workforce Enrichment Program
Name of Your Organization: South Jamaica Cornerstone
[Aimee Aikens ]
Overview of the Project - Please provide a brief description of the project.
[ Many children in the South Jamaica area are not provided with different resources for college programs and job networks. There are often programs in existence, but getting into these programs can be difficult. Students can receive college information from high schools and junior high schools. However, upon observation, it seems as if students in the best schools, with the best grades, receive better information. The South Jamaica Cornerstone Community Center can become a hub for college and job resources.
New York City has minimal programs for students. Many students are unaware of various programs or unsure of how to apply. In many cases programs are run by lottery systems and a select few people are chosen or accepted. The low-income community are rarely targeted. The low-income work programs are offered mostly in the summer time. Finding a job at a young age can be difficult due to a lack of experience.
South Jamaica Cornerstone would like to create a college career enrichment program for students in grades six through nine to a create a gateway for college and career readiness. We would pick between 6-8 students who have low grades in school. We would use this program to boost their education interest. The program will be a six-week program. Students will receive different resume writing classes, interview workshops, a college tour, a bi- weekly stipend, individual tablets, workforce training, seminars and an exit brunch. ]
