Forever You & I and The Pride & The Proud Project
Name of Your Organization:
YVote/Next Generation Politics
Overview of the Project - Please provide a brief description of the project.
Our Gender & LGBTQ+ Justice Groups propose to provide forum-based programs for middle schools around all five boroughs. Schools will have the ability to choose among two different programs.
I. The Pride & The Proud Project
Representatives from our LGBTQ+ justice group will introduce two guest speakers for every meeting, one LGBTQ+ youth as well as one teacher from a selected school (either LGBTQ+ or an Ally), who will narrate their personal experience of what it means to be LGBTQ+ and/or an Ally. Following the course of a 45- 2 hour session, our group will lead a presentation on the brief history of the LGBTQ+ community and discuss the historic and modern policies surrounding the issues that they have had and still continue to endure. Lastly, we will transition to an open space where we will pose questions to the group and engage in a seminar of speaking and learning from each other. We will provide them with a pamphlet emphasizing how important it is to fight for reform. As a thank you for their time, we will give them trinkets and memorabilia items to remind them of our cause and to continue advocating for this issue.
II. Forever You & I
Representatives from our Gender Justice group will facilitate an enrichment program that focuses on the education, encouragement, and empowerment of young people.
- Education: teach lessons on historical and contemporary figures that advocate(d) for gender justice
- Empowerment: Hold weekly motivational seminars around debunking gender norms and creating strong gender identity and pride
There are many young teens in New York who are severely undereducated on significant concepts that can help mold and shape their future. This program will provide a safe space for boys and girls to become educated on the important gender justice figures, both historical and contemporary, and encourage and empower them through the use of motivational webinars and engaging activities and projects to truly mold future leaders in the community.
Which of the following issues does your project address?
- Issue 1 - Addressing Mental Health
- Issue 2 - Preparation for College and/or Career
- Issue 3 - Youth Advocacy Promotion
In our project, we will address Issue 1 and Issue 3
Youth Engagement - Please explain how you will engage youth in the planning and implementation of the project.
A dozen youth who are part of these Justice Groups, supported by another 60 youth who are part of YVote, designed this proposal and will be involved in every aspect of implementing it. Our impact on middle school communities will be by getting more information to middle schoolers who are exploring their individuality and/or might be confused about their identity. We will assess our impact by conducting surveys to get a sense of their feelings about the LGBTQ+ community and new knowledge about the issues. We will engage in post-discussions after our presentations, and finalize our session with important messages and calls to action.
The budget would be used to provide participants with stipends, memorabilia with which to remember and take pride in what we learn, and to engage and honor guest speakers for webinars that will provide participants with vital knowledge
