- PS 122Q The Mamie Fay School in Astoria always needs more funding to support the placement and evolution of programming and resources in these ever-changing educational areas. Now, and in the future, a fully supported STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) provides a vital holistic learning approach that combines scientific inquiry with artistic expression, promoting innovative and creative interdisciplinary skills for the future. And the earlier students are exposed to the STEAM disciplines, the better. STEAM education builds on its predecessor STEM. STEAM focuses on sparking imagination and creativity through the arts in ways that naturally align with STEM learning by including the arts ranging from visual arts, language arts, and physical arts to music and more. The allotted $250,000 People’s Money Participatory Budgeting expense project budget will fund two major in-school initiatives for three years, providing the groundwork and vetting for ongoing programming opportunities. Integrating and enhancing STEAM Education in the PS 122Q curriculum is one of the best ways to prepare students for the world’s increasingly fast-paced communication and jobs that do not exist today. - What is the solution to the challenge?
- This Expense Project consists of two in-school initiatives. First is safeguarding arts education. Arts education is often cut or removed from school programming. While visual arts, dance, and music are currently part of the academic curriculum at PS 122Q, theatre arts education is in jeopardy. We cannot limit theatre arts education opportunities to after-school or temporary residencies. The ongoing, cumulative power of creative play and storytelling is proven to have a lasting impact on overall student success and wellness. Funding consistent, high-quality theatre arts programming for all elementary and middle school students at PS 122Q will improve their learning and make them more empathetic, passionate citizens. Additionally, safeguards must be in place to secure visual arts, dance, and music programming so they remain part of the curriculum. The second initiative is to keep STEM education updated. STEM is often underfunded, and new tools and resources are cost-prohibitive for schools to purchase, support, and update. STEM education is more than updated computers, coding programs, and accessible technology. It’s important because it develops and nurtures: critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, creative innovation, and collaborative teamwork. STEM programming will prepare students for a future heavily reliant on advancing technology and give them the skills to analyze complex situations and explore solutions. Many education experts regard STEAM as an essential component of 21st-century education. Students who learn in a well-funded, integrated STEAM framework are taught not just the subject matter but they are taught how to learn, ask questions, experiment, and create.
