- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- We are not aware of any extracurricular programs or services offering programs and services to make Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) as exciting and accessible as sports. In this current age of technology we need to keep the community up with STEAM and its advancements. We need to prepare the youth for careers of the future. The schools and extracurricular programs offer sports but do not offer STEAM.
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- S.T.E.A.M. CHAMPS is an education center focused on project based learning and can implement afterschool and extracurricular programs and services all inclusive which provide not only sports, but computers, science, technology, engineering, art, math, etc. Through hands-on workshops, coding classes, robotics challenges, and creative projects, we strive to spark curiosity, build critical skills, and empower youth to envision themselves as innovators and problem solvers. By integrating engaging STEM activities with real-world problem solving, we aim to give youth the tools to succeed academically, explore career paths, and develop a lifelong passion for learning. The program is run like a gym where our foundation is based upon teamwork, discipline, and leadership. 20% of high school graduates are prepared for college-level coursework in STEM majors. While schools and extracurricular leagues and programs are emphasizing to "go pro" to the youth. The truth is it is like the odds on winning the lottery, like a one in a million. Only 1% of less of the youth athletes make the pros and only 1% of those pursue a career in the business of sports after their playing days are over. What does one do if you are injured through no fault of your own and you are not equipped or trained in any field, career, or job? STEM jobs are projected to grow 10.8% between 2022 and 2032, almost 4x faster than non-STEM jobs. The U.S. will need to fill about 3.5 million jobs by 2025, but 2 million may be unfulfilled due to a skills gap. The median annual wage for all STEM occupations in $96,980 compared with $44,670 for non-STEM jobs. Why shouldn't those available jobs go to our youth? They should! But our youth need to be trained properly, learn and be inspired. Representation Matters - S.T.E.A.M. CHAMPS is the first Afra-Latina owned STEM center and a certified M/WBE. Black and Hispanic individuals represent 9% and 8% of the STEM workforce despite accounting for 12% and 19% of the U.S. population. Students who see role models of their race and ethnicity are 2.5 times more likely to pursue STEM careers themselves. PROGRAMS - AfterSchool programs will be provided - homework help, STEAM Champs Classes, and SHSAT Prep. There will be Competitions - Minecraft Build competitions, Hack-a-thon, Congressional App Challenge. There will be Events - Science Fair, Sneakerball, and Field Trips. 5 Year Maintenance Program - will be established with equipment, programming, competitions, mini resume building, staffing, events, awards and parental and community engagement. The program is led by owner-founder Niesha Butler (and a team of professionals) who rose from the streets of New York to become a professional basketball player, software engineer, broadcaster, entrepreneur, and computer science teacher for Microsoft. She was NYC's all-time leading scorer in basketball, was a stand out at Georgia Tech, and played professionally in the WNBA for the NY Liberty and elsewhere and broadcast on sports networks and on CBS. Thereafter, she turned to her passion for STEM and created STEAM Champs to teach and empower the youth and give back to the community. You may go pro in sports but Go pro in STEM and other endeavors and help yourself, your family and loved ones, and the community.
