- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- Access to arts experiences across NYC are often not equally available to all city residents. In particular, opportunities to participate in dance classes are often costly and concentrated in a few specific areas of Manhattan, centering Western dance forms such as ballet and contemporary dance. Dancewave addresses this challenge through intergenerational dance classes that are free to participants, taking place at varying locations across the borough. We will partner with Brooklyn-based public schools with whom we have existing relationships as well as branches of the Brooklyn Public Library to host classes in neighborhoods across Brooklyn.
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- Dancewave’s Moving Together program provides accessible and inclusive community-building through dance. These classes aim to address barriers to accessing quality dance education opportunities, and provide numerous individual and community benefits including: 1. High-quality dance experiences in community spaces, which are free and accessible to all; 2. The natural health benefits that dance provides, in addition to inspiring confidence, self-expression and joy; 3. Raising awareness of global dance forms in order to instill a sense of unity and inclusion among participants; 4.The opportunity to learn about cultural dances and practices from communities across NYC and the world. The arts overall, and dance in particular, are a key component of our social fabric and mental and physical well-being. Participation in dance experiences contributes to developing relationships, connecting people, and increased feelings of joy and togetherness for participants. Dance has also been linked to the alleviation of depressive symptoms and the increase in working memory capacity, motor skill development, social emotional learning capacities, and cognitive growth and flexibility. Moving Together classes are designed for people of all ages and abilities. We look forward to offering dance classes as opportunities for social cohesion and community-building to neighborhoods across Brooklyn.
