- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- New York City’s high-traffic neighborhoods face challenges with pedestrian safety, particularly in areas with schools, senior centers, and major transit hubs. Data shows that vulnerable groups like children and seniors are disproportionately affected by traffic-related injuries due to inadequate infrastructure, lack of visibility, Poorly marked or faded crosswalks, High vehicle speeds in residential areas, Limited awareness of pedestrian safety rules and Inconsistent access to pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, like crossing signals and bike lanes.
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- The Safe Streets for All Initiative aims to improve pedestrian safety in high-traffic areas across NYC by implementing community-led street design enhancements, such as brightly painted crosswalks, traffic calming measures, and strategically placed signage to increase visibility. The program will also focus on creating "Safe Routes to School" by identifying and addressing dangerous intersections near schools and senior centers. By collaborating with local residents, schools, and traffic engineers, the initiative will ensure that the solutions are tailored to the unique needs of each neighborhood, ultimately reducing accidents and creating a safer environment for pedestrians of all ages.
