- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- According to the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General, the lack of social connections is as dangerous as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day (2017). The challenge being addressed is the growing issue of social disconnection since the COVID-19 pandemic. Many NYC communities, particularly those that are underrepresented or marginalized, experience complexities in authentically communicating with others and emotionally connecting to those around them ( who are not family, friends, or coworkers). This challenge is amplified by the rise of social isolation, where people struggle to engage in deep and meaningful conversations. In the era of technology, social platforms are not enhancing our social connections but, in fact, increasing our ability to be exposed to people in an isolated way. In-person meaningful connections are decreasing at an alarming rate. I think there is an opportunity for both in-person and technology-driven connections. It is just a matter of creating balance and intentionality for humans to connect with humans.
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- Social connections across diverse groups are vital and will be more critical for our social ecosystem. Changes coming from the top down will ultimately create division across groups, but not if we can prevent it. I am proposing a dualistic approach to strengthening our social infrastructure through research and community engagement. Through a combination of play mechanics ( fun, joy, game, questions, conversation starters, conversation tools) and conversation prompts, the programming will encourage individuals to engage with each other, like how people engage in deep conversations through podcasts and play. Setting up miniature versions of podcast sessions and social mixers across the borough will reimagine and redesign the way people connect with people. Through research, we will surface the needs of these communities to engage in cross-cultural dialogue. With the data, we will design programming and workshops that will directly respond to the learnings that surface from the surveys and in-person studies. How do NYCers desire to connect? How does one orient to a space that makes them feel safe to connect? Do I share identity, experience, culture, interests, capacity, and economics? How do we want it to feel across connections? How do social connections help us to know where we belong and who we belong to?
