- Veteran’s Upstate Cannabis and Hemp Farms Tour: Nurturing Healing, Empowering Veterans, and Fostering Inclusive Community Growth Project Submitted by: Dondi McKellar, USN (MST) Pronouns: he/him. Introduction We are excited to introduce the unique Veteran Upstate Cannabis and Hemp Farms Tour. This one-of-a-kind, immersive initiative spans a year and offers veterans and diverse community members a hands-on experience in the cannabis and hemp industry. Our program stands out by providing a comprehensive view into the cultivation and therapeutic potential of cannabis and hemp, empowering participants to explore new wellness avenues and economic opportunities. This project, seeking essential funding through The People’s Money Initiative, is a testament to New York City’s commitment to empowering veterans and other underserved groups. With your support, we aim to expand the program to include seniors, justice-impacted individuals, people with disabilities, low-income individuals, and community members. This broad, inclusive approach ensures that all participants can learn, heal, and grow, fostering a sense of community and shared growth. Veterans’ Participation and Community Inclusion in Cannabis Regulation In this tour, we prioritize service-disabled veterans, particularly their involvement in New York’s cannabis regulatory framework. Veterans seeking to own and operate enterprises within this industry exemplify the resilience, entrepreneurship, and determination that this program celebrates. By showcasing the contributions of service-disabled veterans and creating opportunities for other groups, this tour not only highlights the cannabis industry’s transformative potential as a source of wellness but also as an inclusive economic frontier, inspiring hope and optimism in our audience. Expanding Our Scope: Addressing Industry Challenges and Fostering Equity The cannabis and hemp industry continues to grapple with federal regulations, notably the Schedule One classification, which impacts accessibility and growth—as well as the negative roll-out in NYC with illegal smoke shops and stigma around them. Our tour includes targeted Network, Outreach, and Education sessions to demystify these regulatory hurdles, especially for marginalized communities affected by cannabis policies. With The People’s Money Initiative’s support, this project becomes a valuable platform for discussing, understanding, and navigating these challenges. The tour will also address issues of social equity and access within the cannabis sector, offering education on legal rights, business ownership pathways, and health-related cannabis applications that can benefit underserved populations. We aim to empower participants with knowledge and tools to explore careers, wellness practices, and advocacy within the cannabis field. Objective The Veteran Upstate Cannabis and Hemp Farms Tour has a dual objective: 1. To educate veterans—and an inclusive group of community members—on the cultivation, health benefits, and economic potential of cannabis and hemp. 2. To equip participants with skills and knowledge for informed decision-making and industry engagement. Our one-year project will include strategically planned Network, Outreach, and Education sessions to deepen participants' understanding of the benefits and complexities of cannabis use and business opportunities, creating a foundation for ongoing personal and economic empowerment.
