- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- You’re probably wondering what Tree Guards are. You probably walked past dozens today! They are small fences that surround trees. They are essential to protect trees from vehicles and dog waste and protect our community investments in new and young trees. \n\nOnly 7 of the 58 trees on the exterior of Tompkins Square Park currently have Tree Guards. \n\nThis includes trees in the middle of the Sunday Greenmarket. Trees here are at an elevated risk of damage from foot traffic, vehicles, tables, and gazebos. \n\nI have spoken to multiple stakeholders who have confirmed this need. Department of Parks & Rec Regional Manager Terese Flores recommends more Tree Guards. So does Kathleen Corrigan, who runs Friends of Tompkins Square Park. And Katie Loeb from Councilwoman’s Carolina Rivera’s office confirmed that the Councilwoman had $25K allocated for tree planting and maintenance, but has not heard from Parks & Rec about where the funds went.\n
- What is the solution to the challenge?
- According to Parks & Rec [1], installing and acquiring each Tree Guard costs about $1300. \n\nSo, installing Tree Guards on all trees in Tompkins Square Park that currently lack one would cost 1300*51 = $66.3K. \n\nMore practically, I would recommend at least installing Tree Guards in the ~eight trees that are impacted by the Greenmarket at a cost of $10.4K. \n
