- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- The Bronx has consistently ranked among the least healthy areas in the nation. Residents in the Bronx have the highest asthma, diabetes, and obesity rates in New York City, particularly for children. Simultaneously, the Bronx is one of the most underserved counties across the state, with the lowest high school graduation rates, highest unemployment rates, third highest income inequality, and highest rate of children living in poverty. The Bronx also significantly lacks in accessible and well-maintained quality public spaces (parks, plazas, streets, sidewalks), further exacerbating these issues, particularly around schools. Many students are not active during the school day due to constraints within their schools - no gym space, no parks nearby, overcrowded schools, and more. Schools need resources to help create more opportunities for play and learning that can create healthy habits and active lifestyles.
- Describe your idea and approach to address the challenge:
- School Streets, through the city's Open Streets program, are a great way to create new public spaces around schools that are safe, active, healthy, accessible, and fun. These spaces can help expand the school into the community, connecting with neighbors and providing safe spaces for gathering. They also create more opportunities for kids to get outside and be a kid! The city should fund more programming to activate these spaces and help support schools who all to often have the highest need but lowest capacity to run an Open Street. Let's create more School Streets in the Bronx!
