- Describe the challenge you want to address:
- \"There’s an inequity in access to quality afterschool programs for young children in New York City, particularly for sports-based programs. Enrolling children into sports teams can be an expensive investment, whether parents and their kids want to be involved or not. \n\nSports aren’t just about games; they’re about teamwork,\nresponsibility, discipline, work ethic, practice, and they give an overall structure and focus and sense of identity to young children which is invaluable. \n\nFurthermore, should kids move on to higher levels as they grow, it’s crucial for children to be exposed to different sports that match their interests from a young age. Inequity of access to sports means an inequity of access to these kinds of opportunities for social, educational, and professional growth\"
- Describe your idea and approach to address the challenge:
- \"Our idea is to fund afterschool sports programs aimed towards very young children in elementary and middle school that are intentionally placed in underserved and underfunded school districts. \n\nThe purpose of these programs is to expose young students to different kinds of sports, and incorporate life-skill building lessons into the program, explaining the potential benefits of sports programs for growth in a variety of ways. \n\nThis program could be facilitated at existing school sites but run by external nonprofit partners which can give working parents a break too, and reassurance regarding the location of the program.\"
