Tool Library / Community Workshop. Description: A tool lending library + community workshop. Could work with the Brooklyn Public library system. Tools would be kept in a space either at the library or nearby. Smaller tools can be borrowed just like other library materials, larger tools could be used on site. Larger tools would need some kind of assurance that the borrower knows how to use it. Libraries could also host 'repair cafes' where folks could bring items that need to be fixed and neighbors who want to learn how to use the larger tools could get certified. This is a skillsharing opportunity. This would also be a good jumping off point for a program of free/affordable home repairs. Need: A lot of things can be saved from the landfill if we have the means/tools to fix them. Access to/storage of tools can be difficult in small living spaces. A tool lending library empowers neighbors in the community to be able to fix things that are broken. Fixing broken things instead of throwing them away helps limit avoidable waste, enables people to spend money on rent and other essentials instead of replacing broken things, and gives the youth - and anyone interested - important life skills.
