Complete Streets Workshops
What problem would you like to solve?
Many streets can be made safer for pedestrians and bicyclists, though community members do not necessarily all have guidance as to the steps to take to bring ideas to fruition - doing a walking audit, devising recommendations for street improvements, mobilizing community support, bringing their recommendations to City Councilmembers and the DOT, and ensuring the project is implemented. More can be done to create Safe Routes to School in NYC and expand Open Streets.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Improving street conditions is important for safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as promoting physical activity and environmental health which are both important for overall human health. Many streets do not have protected bike lanes; some streets have many lanes of traffic that pedestrians need to cross when crossing the street; not all schools have zones that are safe for students to walk or bike to school. Some sidewalks are cracked and broken and not safe. These types of issues could be resolved if more community members were educated as to the steps to take to raise the issues to the authorities that have the capacity to address the issues.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
Bronx Health REACH works with Transportation Alternatives, America Walks, and other Complete Streets experts through the New York State Department of Health Creating Healthy Schools and Communities program. With additional resources, workshops could be created that could be brought to more schools, community-based organizations and faith-based organizations, to engage more community members in taking action to improve the streets in their communities.
Who would that help?
This would help Bronx residents and others who travel through the Bronx, especially pedestrians and bicyclists.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
Neighborhoods throughout the Bronx especially the South Bronx.
