What problem would you like to solve?
The lack of education opportunities and well-being for my community's youth.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
There are a number of Black and Brown students from the Harlem Community who are not given the same access to higher education due to resources, funds, knowledge, and opportunity. With Columbia U, City University, and Hunter/Silberman all within the vicinity, the numbers still are abysmal regarding admittance to these institutions.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
We would like to connect high school students with Masters students at Columbia University who are part of the School of Social Work Action Lab for Social Justice. High schoolers can link with the university on projects, community building, advocacy, and community organizing. Then there can be a natural link to the university for future admission. We would generate scholarships, awards, school events, and other ways to build and maintain a more solid connection with the community and the university. This would increase educational access and support the community by improving the lives of families through educational access.
Who would that help?
Harlem Community, adolescents, and families.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
Central Harlem
