Success Bed-Stuy
What problem would you like to solve?
To increase the overall pride of native residents of Bed-Stuy. Submitted on behalf of Nathalie, Bed-Stuy Resident.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
This is important to help maintain the legacy of Bed-Stuy and to empower the next generation. By doing so, this can inspire them to continue to invest and engage in community building despite the changing demographics of Bed-Stuy.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
To address this, we should utilize the foundation set forth by organization such as Restoration Plaza and use it as hub to bring workshops hosted by community organization. These workshops can have different themes and service multiple generations. Some events can include, career workshops, sewing classes, wellness events, mentorship, career exposure, home economics, youth earning certificate programs reinforcing 21st century skills and EMT course to name a few. These programs can be a pathway to encourage people to use the services that are provided through out the neighborhood. Another program could include having a workshop series teaching community stewardship that invites local primary schools to take field trips to restoration plaza. These programs can also supplement the lack of vocational and trade programs in public school through partnership with a community center like restoration.
These programs can be kicked off during the summer given that the summer block events such as TAMA (Tompkins Avenue Merchant Association) have been successful at attracting a lot of attention. Further advertisement can be done by posting flyers/ banners at the entrance of the train stations in the community given that they garner at lot of foot traffic.
Who would that help?
The residents of Bed-Stuy across generations.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
Bedford Stuyvesant
