What problem would you like to solve?
Tenant harassment is prevalent in New York City and one way that I've seen some resolution is with strong tenant organizers supporting tenants.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
Its important to prevent homelessness; thereby creating a fairer, more equitable society. Plus, its good for mental health and our artists will have more time for their art. (Rent is very expensive and exploitative and forces people to work multiple jobs and have roommates which prevent them from spending time on organizing.)
What idea do you have to address the problem?
My idea is to fund tenant organizers. The money should go to the most impacted and high-risk neighborhoods to already existing organizations who are on the ground with local organizers. The money should not be attached to any requirements except to fund the work of tenant organizers. This should cover six organizers split equitably between existing organizations.
Who would that help?
This would help children and families who live in old buildings with lead paint and are high-risk for lead poisoning; seniors who are stuck at home or spend a lot of time at home in apartments with desperate need of repairs; rent-regulated tenants who are being harassed by profit-driven private equity firm and corporate landlords; and anyone whose warrant of habitability is threatened or already violated.
What neighborhood would benefit from your idea?
Lower East Side & Chinatown
