What problem would you like to solve?
According to the CDC, 42.4% of Americans are obese and nearly 1 out of 4 Americans have high blood pressure. In the Fordham and Kingsbridge area, where our participants are located, physical activities are limited due to lack of resources as a result of COVID 19. Facilities that were previously offering free and low-cost activities are no longer offering their services. As a result, not many free or low-cost physical activities are being offered at this time which makes it difficult for the community to remain active and healthy.
Additionally, there is more access to fast foods and quick high caloric meals then healthier choices. You can get a fast-food combo meal for $6,00 but a salad will cost $10.00 on average. It is cheaper to eat unhealthy foods than organic and fresh vegetables.
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
This community consists of low-income individuals and families who have no access or limited access to health care and are struggling financially. They might have health issues including but not limited to diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. The Community Health Fairs will provide them with healthy recipes, information, nature and holistic ways of controlling their aliments, as well free fitness and wellness classes. The holistic remedies are not meant to disregard any advice by a medical professional.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
To have 4 Community Health and Fitness Fairs which would be designed to get the community moving while they learn about healthy eating. At the first Community Health Fair, the participants will establish wellness goals that want to reach by the end of the year; followed by check-ins at each quarterly Community Health Fair. They will receive rewards for meeting their wellness milestones. The milestones do not have to be weight related. The Community Health and Fitness Fairs will consist of a full day of fitness/dance classes, info and resources on healthy eating, and demos on how to prepare healthy meals.
Who would that help?
This project would help anyone and everyone who wants to live a healthy lifestyle. It is designed for ages 10 - 100.
What NYC borough would benefit from your idea?
