Nature connection
What problem would you like to solve?
People within the city are very disconnected with nature leading to a lack of green spaces and because of that, disappearance of species
Why is it important to solve? Why is it relevant for the community?
More awareness of nature will make more people willing to protect the spaces we already have. Our green spaces are used by the community, but are also used by our local animals and insects. We are also a large hub for migrating birds and our green spaces are very important for the survival of many birds, some of which are endangered, that pass through the area yearly.
What idea do you have to address the problem?
- Spread word about the many free informational park programs
- Bird cams where people can stay in touch with our local nature even from home
- “Advertisements” on buses and trains about seasonal natural events like bird migrations with information about the birds and tips on safe viewing
- More access to hard to reach nature reserves via public transportation
- Partner with organizations like Audubon and Wild Bird Fund to inform the public about birds and other wildlife in our city and ways to help them
- Similar to the library’s telescope loan program, binoculars could be added to encourage observing nature from a safe distance.
- School trips to nature sites like Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
- Advertise apps like NYC Street Tree Map, Merlin, and iNaturalist to help people become familiar with everything related to nature in their own neighborhood
- Advertise volunteer opportunities for helping local nature, such as caring for trees, beach cleanups, etc
Who would that help?
Everyone. Including animals.
